A Day in a Warehouse — Where Robots Insert

Receiving and Inbound
Trucks arrive. Pallets come off the dock. A robot can carry them to staging or storage — if the dock-to-storage route is clear, the pallet interface matches, and the robot can handle the load weight and dimensions.
Put-Away and Storage
Items move from staging to assigned locations. Some robots can handle this, but racking height, aisle width, and load stability determine whether an autonomous forklift or an AMR is the right fit.
Picking and Line-Side Replenishment
Pickers need materials at the right place and time. Robots can deliver to picking stations on demand, reducing empty walking time. This works best when the WMS dispatches tasks directly to the fleet platform.
Outbound and Shipping
Packed orders move to dock doors. Peak shipping windows put pressure on available transport capacity. Robots can help, but dock door scheduling and order sequencing affect how many are needed.
Cross-Floor or Cross-Zone Movement
Some warehouses span multiple floors or buildings. Moving items between zones may require elevators, automatic doors, or outdoor paths. These capabilities vary by model and must be confirmed for your site.

Robot Types Warehouse Operators Encounter

AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots)

AMRs navigate with onboard sensors and digital maps. Most use infrastructure‑free SLAM; some require reflectors, QR codes or other aids. Models vary in payload, size and navigation, with select units able to interface conveyors or carry racks/carts via top modules.

Autonomous Forklifts

Self-driving forklifts handle palletized loads. Lift height, aisle width, and pallet compatibility must match your racking and load types. Not all autonomous forklifts work with every pallet standard.

Towing and Transport Robots

These tow carts, trolleys, or wheeled loads between fixed points. They suit repetitive batch transport where multiple carts follow a predictable route.

Integration, Safety, and What to Watch

WMS and Fleet Platform Integration

Your WMS dispatches tasks to staff. A robot fleet platform needs to receive similar task assignments. Whether the two systems can talk to each other — and what middleware or API is needed — depends on both platforms. This is confirmed with the manufacturer and integrator, not assumed.

Elevator and Door Interfaces

Multi-floor operations need elevator and automatic door integration. This depends on the robot model, elevator brand, and building control system. It is not a standard feature — confirm during evaluation.

Mixed-Brand Fleet Management

One platform controlling robots from different brands may be possible but should not be assumed. Compatibility depends on architecture, protocols, and supported functions. Assess case by case.

Shared-Route Safety

Robots alongside forklifts and pedestrians need sensor-based obstacle detection, speed control, and traffic rules. ISO 3691-4 may apply depending on your region and application.

Cold, Dusty, or Uneven Areas

Most warehouse robots are designed for indoor, flat, dry environments. Cold storage, dusty areas, or uneven surfaces require models with appropriate environmental ratings — and these may limit available options.
