A food production line shuts down for daily washdown. Water sprays everywhere — floors, walls, equipment, and anything in the path. The AMR that was parked in the aisle gets soaked. The next morning, it will not start — water entered the chassis through an unsealed connector.
Food and beverage manufacturing has constraints that go beyond transport efficiency: washdown procedures, hygienic design standards, temperature zone transitions, packaging variety, and traceability. Hygienic Design and Washdown Compatibility

Temperature Zone Transitions
Food factories often have multiple temperature zones — cold storage, refrigerated, ambient, and heat treatment areas. AMRs crossing between zones face:
- Condensation — sensors and electronics fog up when moving from cold to warm zones. This can affect navigation accuracy and safety sensor reliability.
- Battery performance — low temperatures reduce battery capacity and may affect charging.
- Tire friction — temperature changes affect friction coefficient, which can affect braking and traction.
- Lubricants — different temperature zones may require different lubricant specifications.
What to confirm: If the AMR crosses temperature zones, request condensation protection evidence, battery low-temperature performance data, and material temperature compatibility. Packaging Variety and Carriers
Food and beverage packaging types vary widely, and each may need a different AMR carrier configuration:

Traceability obligations depend on jurisdiction, product, and process — for example, EU General Food Law and US FSMA requirements apply to relevant food products and entities.
AMR traceability requirements:
- Transport records must include: material ID, batch/lot number, transport time, origin, destination.
- Exception records — temperature deviations, collisions, delays during transport.
- Integration with WMS/MES — AMR tasks link to material batches, and the system updates material location on delivery.
What to confirm: Confirm the AMR system integrates with WMS/MES to support the traceability chain. If the chain breaks — for example, the AMR delivers material without recording the move — it may create a food safety compliance gap.
